Honky Tonks was first established in Hertfordshire in 1995 by Helen Williams. It was when Helen tried to find a suitable introduction to music for her daughter, Annabel, who was then six months old, but to Helen’s surprise, she discovered there were no musical groups in the area for babies and pre-school children. Undeterred, she decided to start her own and the idea of Honky Tonks was born!
In December 1997, Helen and her family relocated to Sutton Coldfield and after six months of settling in, Helen decided to set up Honky Tonks in the Midlands. Since then, Honky Tonks has been going from strength to strength. Although based in Sutton Coldfield, Honky Tonks welcomes kids and parents from all over the Midlands.
Helen is also an experienced choir leader currently working with 6 choirs for both children and adults. While she has a very busy life, she is passionate about the importance of introducing music to young children, as she believes it to be an essential stepping stone to their education and also allows them to associate music with fun and enjoyment for the rest of their lives.
Honky Tonks remains the only independent music group in the area and the only local group that sings traditional nursery rhymes, which enables mums and kids to sing them together; essential for encouraging singing at home!
Helen is a trained classical soprano, having studied singing at The Royal Academy of Music and Guildhall School of Music and still sings professionally when her three children allow her the time!!
